Corinna Helenelund & Lukas Hoffmann: The Dough | 12.10.-4.11.2018

Sisilisko, Täti Laava ja Sora viettivät yhteisen kesän luolastossa merellä. Joka aamu he uivat Syanobakteerin kanssa, joka ilta Yö laittoi heidät nukkumaan. Päivisin he vaivasivat ajatuksia, väänsivät aikaa, keräsivät kiviä, kuorivat sipulia, ja sitoivat kaiken yhteen huokoiseksi verkoksi. Heidän ympärillään lenteli ajatuksia kuten: Jos leivot pizzan kiviuunissa, tunteeko taikina maailman syntymisen värinän kuumassa kivessä? Muistavatko kehomme mineraalit menneisyytensä maan alla? Kaipaavatko he ulos meistä? Miten voin olla avoin rei’ille ja raoille joita elämä minulle avaa? Millainen muotoni on tänään, vai olenko muodoton? Voisiko taide olla jatkuvaa vaivaamista ja muovaamista, projekti projekteja vastaan?

Kesän lopulla eilispäivän puuro alkoi kohota ja kuiskasi kuplien: ”on aika lähteä matkaan – pimeydessä paisumista jatkaa”.

Corinna Helenelund ja Lukas Hoffmann ovat taiteilijoita, jotka työskentelevät yleensä rinnakkain: Corinna kuvanveiston, installaation ja lavastuksen parissa, Lukas yksin ja ryhmissä videon ja objektien parissa. Titanikin The Dough-näyttelyssä he ovat yhdistäneet työskentelynsä tutkivan työhuoneprosessin muotoon, etsien vaikutteita toisistaan, mutta samalla myös heidän väliinsä nousevasta tuntemattomasta.

Corinna Helenelund valmistui Kuvataideakatemiasta 2013, ja on sitä lähtien asunut ja työskennellyt Porvoossa ja Berliinissä. Vuonna 2018 hän työskentelee HIAPin residenssissä Suomenlinnassa.

Lukas Hoffmann asuu ja työskentelee Berliinissä. Hän on opiskellut Kuvataideakatemiassa, sekä Amsterdamin Gerrit Rietveld Academyssa. Parhaillaan hän opiskelee Dutch Art Institutessa. Hoffmann on osa Samet Yilmaz -taiteilijakollektiivia (entinen k.i. beyoncé).

Corinna Helenelund & Lukas Hoffmann: The Dough – ‘in it what’s in it’

The Lizard, Lady Lava and Geröll spent a summer together in the caves at the sea. Every morning they were swimming with Cyanobacteria, every evening The Night took them to sleep. In between they were kneading thoughts, warping time, collecting stones, peeling onions, and knotting it all together into a spongy net. Around them flew thoughts like: If you bake a pizza on a stone plate, can the dough feel the birth of the earth vibrating in the hot stone? Do the minerals in our bodies remember their past underground? Are they longing to get out of us? How can I be open to the holes and cracks life is unzipping for me? How’s my form right now, or am I formless? Could art be a continuous act of kneading, a project against projects?

At the end of the summer, yesterday’s porridge started raising and bubblingly whispered: “it’s time to embark – you can grow in the dark”.

Corinna Helenelund and Lukas Hoffmann are two artists usually working next to each other: Corinna with sculpture, installation and stage design, and Lukas with video, objects and in groups. In The Dough, shown at Titanik, they have mixed their practices in a searching studio process, trying to get influenced by each other but also by the unfamiliar that is emerging in between.

Corinna Helenelund studied at the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts (MFA 2013) and has since been living and working between Porvoo and Berlin. She currently holds a residency at HIAP, Suomenlinna.

Lukas Hoffmann lives and works in Berlin. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Helsinki and at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam. He is currently enrolled at the Dutch Art Institute, Roaming. He is also part of the artist collective Samet Yilmaz (formerly known as k.i. beyoncé).
