Saksalainen Gabi Schaffner on matkustava taiteilija ja kuraattori, joka työskentelee äänitaiteen, säveltämisen ja visionäärisen dokumentaation parissa. Hänen taiteellisen työnsä keskiössä on kommunikaatio, ei-hierakkinen näkökulma ja jakaminen, ja hän yhdistää työssään eri medioita: ääntä, tekstiä, radiota, interventiota ja performanssia. Schaffner työskenteli Saaren kartanossa keväällä 2011.
Taiteilijatapaamisessa esitetään Schaffnerin teos Resounding Bangalore, 25 minuutin pituinen äänikollaasi, joka yhdistelee eri äänitallenteita Bangaloren kaupungista (ja joitakin äänitallenteita maaseudulta) neliulotteiseksi äänikentäksi. Teos naamioituu paikalliseksi radiolähetykseksi ja se sisältää otoksia bangalorelaisesta radiosta, runoutta sekä pätkiä paikallisten ihmisten haastatteluista), ja se kutsuu vaalimaan alkuperäistä äänimaailmaa, joka toistetaan ”vieraan” korvien kautta.

Meet the Artist on Saaren kartanon toiminnan 10-vuotisjuhlavuoden tapahtumasarja, jossa Saaren kartanossa työskentelevät tai työskennelleet taiteilijat esittäytyvät paikallisesti ja alueellisesti.
Yhteistyössä Saaren kartano ja Titanik-galleria.
Saaren kartano on Koneen Säätiön ylläpitämä taiteilija ja -tutkijaresidenssi Mynämäellä.
Sen tehtävänä on tarjota eri alojen taiteilijoille ja tutkijoille rauhallinen työskentely-ympäristö ja hedelmällinen kohtauspaikka. Saaren kartano viettää 10-vuotisjuhlavuottaan 2018.

”Resounding Bangalore” is a 25 minute sound collage that assembles selected field recordings of the city (and some rural locations) into a four-dimensional sound field.
While the acoustical backdrop consists of two ordinary speakers, a low-range radio transmitter broadcasts a parallel track simultaneously that is received and made audible by three (or more) FM-radios in the room. For the performance at Titanik though, the radio part gets adapted to a set-up with smaller speakers.
Disguised as a local radio program (containing samples of Bangalorian radio, static, selected poetry and snippets of local interviews), the parallel track makes the soundscape spatially extend into the audience – according to the positions of the speakers (radios).
”Resounding Bangalore” is an invitation to cherish an indigenous sound world played back through the ears of a ”stranger”. In my work this cultural information becomes often framed as musical concepts. The interplay of distance and difference resounds as a multileveled choir of codes that may be read differently.
For example, the understanding of an acoustic structure (say, the clapping of hands) may oscillate between something entirely familiar or something abstract: its rhythmic essence is still music.
” I work as an interdisciplinary travelling artist and curator within the fields of sound art, composition and visionary documentation. Central to my activities are communication, non-hierarchic perspectives and sharing. Different media are combined: Sound, text, bookmaking, radio, intervention and performance.
In 2012 I founded Datscha Radio, a temporary mobile radio station that focuses on the realms of gardening and ecology. Ethnographic fieldwork is linked to poetics, community work, sound art and transmission.
Since 2015, my artistic practice has expanded to include combinations of micro-radio installation, storytelling and improvised shows. Almost all works are geographically anchored and make use of the local sounds and voices. ” – Gabi Schaffner –
