(1) Naapurustossa seisova nainen saa osakseen hyvää tarkoittavaa utelua. Tai ehkä se on tarvetta toimintaan ja nopeaan poistumiseen. 

En kuitenkaan tunne itseäni ulkopuoliseksi enkä päämäärättömäksi. 

Pitääkö tuntemattoman aina tuntua uhalta? 

(1) The sight of a woman standing on street corners is met with some well-intentioned querying. Or perhaps, it is the need for action and swift evacuation. 

Though, I neither feel out of place nor aimless.  

Does the unfamiliar always have to feel like a threat?  

(2) Ruokalähettinä työskentelevä Aziz nauraa, kun kerron hänelle, että minulle on tarjottu apua useammin kuin kerran kaupungissa. Useimmiten minulle on tarjottu tietä ulos naapurustosta – heidän naapurustostaan. 

Aziz ja muut hänen ihonvärinsä omaavat miehet kantavat ruokakuljetuslaukkujaan ja yrityksen logojaan kuin haarniskaa – valppaina, oikeutettuina ja tehtävää suorittaen. 

He eivät halua säikäyttää asukkaita, hän sanoo, he säikähtävät helposti. 

(2)  Aziz, who works as a food courier, laughs when I tell him that I have been offered assistance more than once in the city. Mostly, offering to guide me out of the neighbourhood––their neighbourhood. 

Aziz and the other men with the colour of his flesh, carry their food delivery bags and company logos like an armour–– aware, legitimate and purposeful. 

They don’t wish to alarm the residents, he says, they startle easy. 

(3) Julkisten tilojen käyttäminen, vaikka ne ovatkin kaikille avoimia ja laillisia, ei välttämättä ole sellaista ylellisyyttä, johon rodullistetuilla on varaa. 

Meillä on yhteinen maa, jolla seisomme tänään, mutta vapauksiemme valuutta ei ole samanarvoinen. 

Toinen on juhannusruusu täydessä kukassa ja toinen istuu tyynenä myrskyn silmässä. 

(3) To occupy public spaces that though open and legal to all is not necessarily a luxury that the coloured body can afford.  

We may share the land that we stand on today but the currency of our leisures is not quite the same.  

One is a midsummer rose in bloom and the other is sitting cross-legged in a storm surge.

Locus Amoenus Expanded: An Alternative City Tour

While nurturing the ethos of Jokamiehen oikeudet, how do subtle forms of erasures and minor acts of everyday violence stand to challenge, threaten or unsettle this claim of Everyperson’s right (to roam)? The study of public space is a way to examine the existing as well as emerging hegemonic patterns which can further hold answers to queries related to how our current society may be conducted or organised.

Over the summer, a part of the public art commission but the city of Turku and Titanik, Shubhangi Singh mapped the streets of the city on foot, stopping, staying, looking and making notes at various spots in the city. The work, Locus Amoenus, currently on view on Rettiginrinne street extends upon the artist’s ongoing practice of ’Noticing and Note-Taking’ which engages artistic forms of recording and interpreting everyday social interactions in public spaces through the act of loitering. 

Led by the artist, the short walk (within one kilometre) takes on the format of the popular city tours but instead of discussing the city’s important sites and its history, Singh narrates brief anecdotes of her observations from the summer.

Tip: Since we will largely be outside for that hour, please wear warm clothing.
